It's A Wonderful LIfe A Radio Play
CATCO IS THEATRE
Columbus Theater Examiner November, 2010

"The moment one steps into Studio One of the Riffe Center, they are immediately transported back to a 1940s radio studio that has been decorated to the Christmas season. Old-style music plays over the speakers. It is clear that the production starts the moment the audience members step through the door. In fact, the audience is part of the production, which is explained by WBFR host Freddie Fillmore—when the “applause” signs turn on, the audience must clap. This is a live radio play, after all. The audience is part of the experience that is supposedly being broadcast coast-to-coast at that moment."

"Michael S. Brewer's radio-studio set evokes the Art Deco styles of Rockefeller Center under Marcus Wuebker's creamy lighting, while Anna Grywalski's costumes and Keya Myers-Alkire's sound design enrich the period atmosphere."

"The second act is again in the house, but this time the dilapidated version. In the first act, the action was in a spacious, well-lit room in the mansion with piano and freedom to move. The second act smartly shows the entire house, darkened and squeezed to claustrophobic size, yet moveable to display various rooms. "

"Maybe there’s something about the Rep’s versions of Stan and Jan Berenstain’s famous bears, which look here like people with flat noses and the poofy hair of Glen Campbell or Elvis circa 1971. Or maybe it’s Michael Brewer’s vibrantly colored sets, which share the eye-popping richness of the best children’s book illustrations. Whatever it is, if you can judge by the noise level of an audience full of preschoolers – absolutely quiet when they should be, but burst out with exclamations every now and again – then Bear Country Musical seems to be just the thing."
